What can I expect from Maine?

MANSIONS OF NEWPORT

The mansions of Newport are where Gilded Age splendor still resides. The mansions of Newport -- originally called "cottages" -- were built as summer homes in the 1850s to 1900 by wealthy tycoons of New York and Philadelphia.

In the late 19th century, moneyed industrialists from New York and farther south hired architects to create summer “cottages” — the mansions so named because their owners spent only a small part of their time there.

THE SHARK MOVIE JAWS WAS FILMED IN THE ISLAND OF MARTHA’S VINEYARD, BY STEVEN SPIELBERG

Was Jaws filmed in Martha's Vineyard?

Though the film takes place in the fictional town of Amity Island in New York,it was actually filmed throughout Martha's Vineyard, Mass. (Long Island was considered "too busy" — the filmmakers wanted an island that would feel eerily empty to filmgoers.) Martha's Vineyard is where Steven Spielberg's film Jaws was filmed.

ACADIA NATIONAL PARK IN MAINE, FAMOUS FOR FALL COLORS

Fall is one of the best times to visit Acadia National Park. The weather is crisp, the crowds are light, and the foliage is spectacular.

Fall is also the busiest season for cruise ships, which dock in Bar Harbor and disgorge thousands of passengers onto the town’s narrow streets. Still, there’s always a dramatic lull in visitation in mid-September between peak summer season and “leaf peeping” season.

Fall foliage generally peaks between October 13–22, but the dates vary from year to year. The prime time is in mid-October when leaf-peeping season begins; the colors make the picturesque vistas that are much more dramatic.
